Pick of the day: Malaak’s studded abaya
As we said, NY Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn was wrong when she said studs are going out of fashion in 2011. Studs have become the staple of edgy, militaristic style since Burberry incorporated the design element into their Spring/Summer 2011 collection like there was no tomorrow.
And now studs have infiltrated even Khaleeji fashion, making their debut in abaya designer Malaak’s own SS2011 line. UAE-based Malaak is being touted as a creator of designs that define the evolution of abayas, and we can’t say we disagree – even though we are pathologically predisposed to disagree with everything.
Featuring exaggerated bionic shoulders and a healthy helping of metal studs from the shoulders down to the hems of the sleeves, this stylish and self-confident abaya even comes with a matching studded turban/headgear for a complete statement look.
Huda N, owner and designer of Malaak, said her “aim as a designer is to set trends not follow them, and each of my collections are unique and never repetitive. For this season, I have taken a fresh standout approach to the abaya. The look is ‘Vogue’ and inspired by the days when Cindy, Christie, Linda, Helena and Naomi were the faces of a generation and encapsulated the idea of the glamorous supermodel.”
MALAAK is stocked locally in USH Boutique in Dubai and Grafika in Abu Dhabi, direct from www.MALAAK.ae, as well as available worldwide on www.3Abaya.com.
