Fashion News Round-up: Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Lacroix for Desigual, Olivia Palermo for Haute Muse in Qatar
Anne Hathaway goes feline: The Love and Other Drugs star is set to play iconic femme fatale Catwoman in the next installment of the new Batman movie franchise, The Dark Night Rises. Hathaway beat competition from Sienna Miller, Charlize Theron and Kate Beckinsale to land the role, and this is where it gets confusing for us.
Isn’t Anne a little too sweet to make climbing posts and purring near Batman’s ear believable? Former Underworld vampire Beckinsale would have been perfect for the role, frankly because we just find it weird when she plays a character that doesn’t routinely, and nonchalantly kill someone off every five minutes of screen time. But maybe Anne is much feistier than people give her credit for. After all, she went toe-to-toe with the devil incarnate in that American Vogue exposé half-disguised as a fictional movie. We’ll see.
Lacroix comes crawling back from the sartorial grave: Spanish streetwear brand Desigual has announced a collaboration with Christian Lacroix. Giving audiences a taste Lacroix in the label’s Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 show, Desigual sent 30 pieces designed by the famous French couturier down the runway to an applauding crowd. More of Monsieur Lacroix’s couture magic will be evident in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection.
We’re quite curious as to why Desigual never attempted to make a buzz about this collaboration. This would have made much bigger waves than the Lanvin x H&M project even if they only exerted half as much marketing effort as the Swedish fast-fashion brand did.
This is an amazing way to keep the Lacroix legacy alive, without the red figures that the couture house had been continuously amassing before it was shut down in December 2009. Will this be the first time in the brand’s history that Lacroix ever turns a profit? We will make sure that it is.
The collection should be available at Desigual stores in the UAE (The Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina Mall) by Fall 2011, so make sure you watch out for that.
Olivia Palermo touches down in Qatar: At a high-profile event to celebrate the forthcoming launch of Haute Muse magazine, Dawlat Qatar’s first high fashion and lifestyle magazine, American socialite and global fashion darling Olivia Palermo hosted a shopping-slash-styling event this week at Sharq hotel in the rapidly developing state.
The magazine, helmed by the fashion bloggers including Fatma Al Thani of HauteCouturista.com, welcomed guests from all over the Middle East, including Dubai’s Hind Beljafla of DAS Collection and Tamara Al Gabbani of House of GlaMo, to an exclusive preview of designer wares yet to hit the stores, brought in by Matches Fashion from London.
It was a very ambitious endeavour by Noor Al Thani, founder and editor of the title, and the fact that she and the rest of the Haute Muse staff were able to pull it off like the classy ladies they are makes the achievement all the more amazing. Congratulations, Haute Muse! We look forward to your debut issue.
