Louis Vuitton S/S 2011 – It’s clutch time
We thought today was going to be a lousy day news-wise but little did we know that we’d be in for a pleasant surprise at the La Moda HQ. Official images from Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection have just arrived in the mail and like the nosy fashion journalists we were, we just had to know what was in the disc.
We already had an idea of the overall aesthetic of the women’s ready to wear Spring line, having watched Louis Vuitton’s Paris show in September, but we didn’t know much about the maison’s exquisite accessories that accompanied the outfits then as fashion shows are mostly about the clothes. Which of those purses made the final cut? Is there more? Those were the burning questions going through our minds as we eagerly loaded the disc onto the computer.
Marc Jacobs’ Spring Summer 2011 accessories collection for Louis Vuitton borrows from the themes which pervaded the ready to wear line showcased earlier this quarter, carrying high-visual impact trends such as colour blocking, sequins, reinterpreted animal prints – all things Seventies. The star pieces of this collection are the clutches, which successfully fuse the timeless structural silhouettes of the classics with the above mentioned seasonal trends.
We’re particularly amazed at how sequins, set against a background of the centuries-old monogram, were employed to achieve a tiger print effect on one of the designs, and how various patches of dyed stingray skin were stitched together to successfully cross colour blocking over, from a systematic method of styling clothes to a single piece of hand candy. This is fashion evolution happening in front of our very eyes, people. Watch and learn.
If you’re planning for a big-ticket fashion purchase for 2011 in the hopes sprucing up your evening wear, we recommend holding out – ignoring the year-end sales left, right and center – for one of these clutches. Those chromatic elongated clutches in juicy stingray deserve special attention so take note of our suggestion. If you’re not planning to buy, at least have a look at your favourite local Louis Vuitton boutique. You may not have the dirhams, but you can admire these clutches as much as you can. And boy, these clutches were made to be admired.
