New Look debuts limited Winter collection

People immediately dismiss high street brands due to their mass-produced, everyone’s-wearing-one-it’s-ridiculous feel, and we can’t really find them at fault for that because our own observations lend sartorial and scientific credence to that idea.

However, whenever we hear somebody utter the words limited edition to describe a new collection – bearing the promise that only a small number of Dubai fashionistas are going to be able to get their paws on the clothes – we leave our prejudices at home and head out to the press show where we can scrutinise the fashion on offer. And so we did Tuesday afternoon to check out New Look’s limited Winter collection at the Fairmont Hotel in Dubai.

What’s up with that?

Sequins, metallics, velvets and elaborate beading dominate the style philosophy employed in New Look’s latest collection – very much on trend if we’re going to judge its overall aesthetic based on the A/W trend report we published here earlier. The pieces indeed sparkle, thanks to the blingy materials and embellishments used, and therefore do give out a dress to impress vibe. There’s one patch-worked fur coat as well, which we hope can be worn on a few December evenings when the weather permits.

Also on show were New Look’s regular Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. Military outerwear – or as a layman said as he approached to complement one of our editors at a fashion show, Michael Jackson jackets – predictably co-stars in this range, together with glammed-up, shearling-lined biker and aviator jackets. The British fast fashion label however put their own spin on the ongoing martial style movement, dishing out a blood-red coat and a grid military waistcoat. Try picturing a subversive little red riding hood. Or a grumpy, rigid restaurant waitress who yells your order back at you and ends her spiel of tonight’s specials with “Sir, yes sir!”

Meanwhile, the biker jackets, we love for two reasons: They’re not thick enough to cause a delirious fever, and they have neither buttons nor zippers to close them up. You don’t close them up. They just fall, and they do wonderfully if we might add. We recommend snapping up one of these at your local New Look branch before the stocks run out. They’re not part of the limited collection, and therefore more of them will be made and sold, but with looks that good, they may as well be. And besides, at only AED 299 a pop, the logic behind their offering is virtually unassailable.

The limited edition Winter line, we’ve been told, will only be available at New Look stores at the Dubai Mall, Ibn Battuta Mall, Deira City Centre, and the Dubai Marina Mall in the UAE. If you fancy glamming up for your nights out in the coming Winter season, which we assume will be plenty, then take a look at these and save a few thousand dirhams along the way.
